Notes from The Studio – No. 1

Last weekend the first snowdrops appeared in our garden. For me snowdrops are always a sign of hope and optimism… beautiful, fragile, determined and resilient… a sign of the earth turning yet again on its axis towards the light.

But it is also important for me to remember not to rush headlong into the spring … I need to sit with some not knowing at the moment … and it is as if the energy of winter is colluding with my need to be quiet and still as I listen and reflect on my focus for the coming year. The essence of winter also chimes with dance step 5 The Art of Listening from my book – taking a dose of my own medicine!

On Monday, Karyn Prentice and I were hosting a group supervision session in Kensington Gardens. The day was dull, cold and windy. The trees were stark and the grass was muddy. But in our work together I was reminded that the same letters which make up the word ‘listen’ also make up the word ‘silent’.

And I realised that if we were to truly dance in tune with nature’s natural rhythms, we would allow ourselves to see Spring – and not January – as the start of our year.

So before you hurtle into the busyness of the New Year and the new decade I invite you to listen to what makes your heart sing so that you can BE the change you want to see in the world.

Happy new year to you and yours!

Elaine, such words of wisdom & beauty I’m directed to delve into step 5 with heart & excitement. My winter is like a first, so far away from any that I have known as a result of my life changing experience last year. Your writing speaks loud & so clear to me. I am so grateful. I will do well not to expend my energy, as I have been doing, in efforts to find a way back & instead turn to embrace my new start with curiosity, gratitude & hope from this new place . I’m reminded that in life we don’t have peaks without the troughs or learn from love ( in this case of self) without pain of loss . With courage 💓
